not an encounter I was prepared for
May. 1st, 2012 10:24 amMy last office location was at the outer edge of the distance I could comfortably bike twice a day and not totally screw up my schedule: about 13 miles each way with a couple of touchy highway / river crossings. My current office is not quite twice that far away: 24 miles each way. So, I am unable to bike all the way to work without (a) killing myself or (b) being unable to do ANYTHING else with my day other than bike and work and bike and fall into bed.
This morning I biked to a colleague's house part way there...a bit less than 10 km / 7 miles, and hitched a ride the rest of the way. Worked out pretty well except:
I beleived Google Bike maps without checking, and at one point was on a narrow track through some woods. Right while I was congratulating myself on navigating the muck and rocks while clipped in, I hear a "graaAAWK" and get slapped and hit in the leg.
Yes. Yes, I was attacked by a Canada goose on the way to work. I managed to stay upright but there were two geese and some bables HISSING LOUDLY at me with their wings outstretched. I wanted to get away from there, grinning nervously and sweating at the thought of getting knocked down and swarmed. However, I had to dismount because Google Bike Maps had led me to a steep gravel embankment and railway tracks. Two more nearby geese hissed and swore at me as I moved along desperately thinking "don't make eye contact, don't make eye contact".
The final insult was having to hop a fence on the other side of the embankment.
I guess I need to change my route...and possibly get some pepper spray.
