I was in Goose bay until lunch time, and they sent a bus over to the barracks to take us to the mess hall (there is a large air base here).  The guy in line next to me sat down and said, "One time, b'y, we just sat down fer dinner [lunch] and de plane she was ready to go, hadda load my pockets with fries and book'er right outta here by jeez."  As I was opening my mouth to reply, the travel coordinator ran into the mess and said "First Dash in 20 minutes, eat quick and get out!"

Apparently it's really important to replane in the order that you landed (since there are now several planeloads worth of people on the ground) but like with everything else, no one really tells you this or why; I just followed along but when I offered to give up my seat on the bus going back they all stared at me like I had two heads:  "Ye came wid uz, b'y, ye gotta leave wid uz!  Sheeziz!"

Thus I find myself at the Voisey's Bay nickel mine site in the Labrador interior.  They've got squash courts, several TV lounges with big leatherette recliners, a full gym, weight room and cardio room, library, craft room, counselling, computer training, clinic, chapel and ... it's pretty impressive, really.  Dinner was a choice of four entrees, the salad bar was longer than that I've seen in many buffet restaurants, there were a dozen ice cream flavours, a slushy machine...  (The smothered pork chops were excellent by the way)  As much as you want. I asked if I would get a swipe card or similar for the dining area and they just laughed.  Not like anyone can walk in from outside and steal food!

The notice boards are a riot.  "Polar bear skin for sale, X3346."

The catch is that I can't leave the building unless it catches fire.  The roads are just graded dirt, there are minimal lights and no barriers to keep one from falling into a valley of scrub and rock, and oh right:  half a dozen black bears as well as foxes and WOLVES.

The rooms are about like classed up dorms; each room is shared off shift so there are two lockable everythings in each room, but only one bed.  The can is shared between two rooms so there's a trick to locking the neighboring door when you go to whiz and then REMEMBERING TO UNLOCK IT AGAIN.  Also I've got a TV, phone, DVD player and hot and cold running internet service.

I dare say this is a far cry from mining camps of days past.

The only real downside is that I'm not here long enough to warrant full site training (a 2 day extravaganza) and so I can't wander the mill by myself, I need to be escorted the whole time.  I really like just wandering around tracking pipes and staring at bits and pieces, lost in thought with my finger in my nose, so this is a bit of a drag.  I suppose at least I have someone to hold the other end of the tape.

I can't stop thinking about Outland.
