I've been reading Julie and Julia and I think I kind of hate it.  The angsty New Yorkishness, the neuroses of the main character, the infidelity subplots...none of this stuff holds much interest and causes me to feel quite unsympathetic with the author.  My main beef, though, is that the joy or simple pleasure derived from the cooking and the food is so often weak or absent, it's written like the woman is punishing herself.

It's audio in my car, not that long, and I'm past the halfway point now, but blurgh.  Not recommended.

Julie and Julia didn't bother me much, but I read it bang through in one sitting at the bookstore, so I probably just didn't notice/don't remember the sucky parts.

Eggs poached in red wine are available at The Publican (http://thepublicanrestaurant.com/) for Sunday brunch, and yeah, they're really good.

Well now I'm glad I've only seen the movie. The movie was light and cute and fun, but my understanding is that the author herself is not particularly light and fun.

Yeah, I did movie only. And Amy Adams is not my favorite person, and I have to say that while I absolutely ENJOYED the movie, it was all due to Meryl Streep's Julia Child performance. The part that was about Julie did kind of bug.

and the book is (I think, having not seen the movie) far, far leaner on the Julia-stuffs.

I really would have enjoyed the movie "Julia." Julie is tiresome as fuck.

YES! God, just chop Julie out of it. I would have watched Meryl Streep be Julia all day long.

I didn't like the movie because Amy Adams' hair looked bad. So there you go.

I typically like Amy Adams just fine, but I watched the trailer on youtube the other day and the whole vibe just set my teeth on edge. (I'm almost done the book and I hate it even more now than I did in the middle, except for a vague urge to pan fry offal). Streep appears to effortlessly knock it out of the park, as always.
